One of Germany's utmost concerns is the negative effects of climate change on the environment. The country is a one of the world's frontrunners in renewable energy, and it has developed and continues to produce many sustainable energy sources, such solar power and wind power. Germany, while relatively small when compared to its counterparts in the production of renewable energy like China, India, and the United States, is still becoming a highly-energy efficient country. As a result of Germany's dedication to the environment, GSMST's German Program strives to actively spread awareness about the ways to combat climate change.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have learned what an arduous task ensuring the safety of our local communities is — let alone entire countries. With this in mind, GSMST's German program wishes to spread awareness about the safety of the world at large with regard to its environment. With this sentiment in mind, our recent projects below provide some possibilities you can do at home to make a difference.

Congratulations!

...to Emiliano Rosales Ramierez, Courtney Palmeri, Shobana Santhanman, & Carlos Burse for participating in the

"Our Sustainable Future”

Our Sustainable Future is a contest organized by Step Into German. According to Step Into German's  "About" page, they are "a campaign organized by the Goethe-Institut to show how German is beneficial to students, families, careers, and opportunities." Conversely, according to The Goethe-Institut's "About Us" page, they are the "cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach."

The three aforementioned GSMST participants are members of NGHS's Sustainability committee, and they partnered with Herr Burse, NGHS's sponsor. Together, the four submitted their project titled: "Our Solarable Future." The project featured their proposal describing a method of increasing the prevalence of solar panels in our local community by creating a more affordable, more easily manufacturable version of the common solar panel.

NGHS is proud to announce that the four placed first overall in the competition.

While the four are honored to have received such a distinction, their work is not yet done. The four are still concerned with the two key issues facing renewable energy: price and lack of awareness. In conjuncture with their successes in the Our Sustainable Future competition, the four are considering a startup with a dual mandate. The startup would would focus on ensuring that more people are able to afford installing solar panels, as well spreading awareness of the benefits of solar energy to ultimately strive towards a cleaner, more sustainable tomorrow.
